H The Municipality of PENN HILLS A HOME RULE COMMUNITY Mayor's Message By Mayor Pauline Calabrese FEEL BETTER - WORK BETTER My boss said to me, "Have a good day." So I went home. One of my top priorities is public safety. To that end, Council and I have been working on improving conditions for our Police, Fire and EMS Departments. When you have better working conditions, you feel better. And when you feel better, you work better. For quite some time our police officers have been looking for a change in their work schedule, which requires them to work six days in a row. After a long time at the drawing board, we are moving to 12 hour shifts. Some of the positive outcomes will be: Better Recruitment - Many other departments in our region already work 12 hour shifts. This schedule is more attractive to recruits. More Time Off Under this schedule, officers would not work six days in a row. This would give them some weekends off and more time to spend with their families and/or in leisure activity to recharge. Decrease in Overtime Although this change was never meant to be a cost- savings measure, the natural result is that it will decrease police overtime. This in turn not only guards against fatigue/burnout, but it will also have a positive effect on the bottom line of our budget. Better Public Safety - With better working conditions, we will have better public safety. I told my boss I saw a turkey crossing the road on the way to work. He said, "How do you know it was going to work."
