Even in the midst of a writers’ strike and the looming threat of an actors’ strike as soon as tomorrow, the Emmy nominations for the best in TV and streaming were announced as planned. Just don’t hold your breath that the current Sept. 18 date for the 75th Annual Emmy Awards telecast will hold.
HBO’s “Succession” topped all programs with 27 Emmy nominations followed by HBO’s “The Last of Us” (24 noms), HBO’s “The White Lotus” (23 noms) and Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” (21 noms).
There were not a lot of Western Pennsylvania ties in this year’s Emmy nominations. Filmed-in-Pittsburgh “A League of Their Own” was completely snubbed. If we really stretch the definition of local ties, the idea for “The Last of Us” was conceived by series creator Neil Druckmann while he was a student at Carnegie Mellon University. “Last of Us” is the first video game adaptation to ever earn major Emmy awards consideration.
Receiving his third Emmy nomination for supporting actor in a comedy series for “Barry” is 2006 CMU grad Anthony Carrigan. And 1978 CMU grad Cherry Jones received a best guest actress nomination for her role in “Succession.” Judith Light, a 1970 CMU grad, received a nomination for best guest actress in a comedy for her turn in “Poker Face.” Amazon Prime Video’s “Daisy Jones & the Six,” which features members of a band from Pittsburgh, received nine nominations including outstanding limited series.
Some noteworthy nominations:
• “Succession” made Emmy history with the most lead actor nominations ever for a single program for stars Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong.
• Deserving “Star Wars” series “Andor” was nominated in the best drama category while undeserving “Obi Wan Kenobi” received a nomination in the limited series category over the far more deserving Amazon Prime Video show “Swarm.”
• HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel “House of the Dragon” received a best drama Emmy nomination while Prime Video’s “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” was snubbed in that top category.
• “1923” and “Yellowstone” were snubbed in major categories. “1923” star Harrison Ford wasn’t nominated for “1923” or comedy series “Shrinking.”
As for when viewers will learn the winners of this year’s Emmys, that remains unclear.
While Emmy officials in conjunction with broadcast partner Fox are taking a wait-and-see approach for now, it’s expected that the awards won’t be given out on Sept. 18 as planned due to the current strike.
Upcoming Local Events
Per Variety, the TV Academy wants to move the telecast to November, in hopes any and all work stoppages will have concluded by then, while Fox favors a January 2024 airdate.
