Courtney Jackson again has shown himself to be a top receiving threat for the Arkansas State football team.
The Gateway graduate, who also returns punts for the Red Wolves, caught 16 passes for 169 yards through five games.
He recorded a season-best five receptions for 69 yards in the opener against Central Arkansas and also hauled in five passes for 41 yards in Arkansas State’s 28-18 loss at Michigan on Sept. 14.
While Jackson didn’t have a receiving touchdown through five games, his special-teams impact was felt in a big way against Tulsa on Sept. 7.
He returned a punt 77 yards for a score in the third quarter to give the Red Wolves the lead at 21-17. Arkansas State went on to win the game 28-24.
Last year, Jackson’s first with the Red Wolves after transferring from Syracuse, he earned Sun Belt Conference honorable mention honors at wide receiver after collecting 689 receiving yards and a team-best seven touchdowns on 39 catches.
Jackson and the Red Wolves (3-2, 1-0 Sun Belt) beat South Alabama on Oct. 5 and were slated to visit conference rival Texas State on Saturday (Oct. 12) before a conference road game this Saturday at Southern Miss.
Tui Faumuina-Brown
The 6-foot-3, 230-pound starting linebacker for the UConn football team recorded 49 total tackles over six games for a Huskies team that was 4-2 after a 29-20 victory over Temple on Oct. 5.
The Gateway grad reached double figures with 11 stops against Temple and tied a career-best with 12 in a close 26-21 loss at Duke on Sept. 14. Those totals for Faumuina-Brown also include two sacks.
Before the season, he was named to the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award Watch List.
The award is presented annually to the most outstanding football player of Polynesian ancestry that epitomizes great ability and integrity.
Faumuina-Brown is one of 96 players on the list from 37 different Football Bowl Subdivision schools.
He played in all 12 games as a junior and finished third on the UConn defense in tackles, making 61 stops, 32 solo, with four tackles for a loss.
Faumuina-Brown posted a season-best 12 tackles at Boston College and added eight stops and intercepted a pass in a home game against South Florida.
UConn returns to action Saturday at home against Wake Forest.
Teddy Almeter
The Grove City men’s soccer team improved to 6-2-2 overall and 3-1 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference after a 6-0 victory at Thiel on Oct. 5.
The victory also marked the fourth solo or shared shutout of the season for junior goalkeeper Teddy Almeter, a Monroeville resident and Serra Catholic graduate.
He gave up seven goals out of 42 shots on goal faced over the first 10 games. A 2023 All-PAC second-team hononree, Almeter recorded a season-best 10 saves in a 2-1 win at Allegheny on Sept. 28.
Maddy Neundorfer
The starting goalkeeper for Duquesne women’s soccer led in minutes played through the team’s 13th game.
She and the team posted an 8-5 record in those 13 contests, including a 2-4 mark in the Atlantic 10.
Neundorfer, a Gateway grad, owned four shutouts where she played the entire 90 minutes. She shared time in goal against Slippery Rock, playing 66 of the 90 minutes in the 7-0 triumph.
Neundorfer recorded a season-best eight saves at Pitt on Aug. 18 and made six stops in a tough 3-1 setback to Fordham in A-10 play.
She owned a 1.41 goals-against average heading into a conference match Saturday (Oct. 12) at LaSalle.
Duquesne plays three of its final four regular-season games on the road before entering the A-10 tournament Nov. 1.
David Clark
The senior starter on the Geneva College men’s tennis team scored victories in singles and doubles action during the season’s opening matches.
In singles, Clark, a Gateway graduate, went 1-2 with a straight-sets victory at Mt. Aloysius on Oct. 3, a three-set loss at Westminster on Sept. 19, and a straight-sets setback at Penn State Altoona on Oct. 8.
He won the first game of his match against Westminster’s Ryan Crissman, a Shaler grad, in a tiebreaker, 7-6, before Crissman rallied for the win.
Clark added a pair of wins in doubles, 6-4 against Westminster and 6-2 with partner Braiden Smalley, a Gibsonia resident, against Mt. Aloysius. He and Smalley came up just short in a 7-5 loss in the match with Penn State Altoona.
Clark was an honorable mention All-PAC selection for his play at doubles for the 2023-24 season.
