Teen shot inside Brighton Heights residence
A 17-year-old boy was shot in the stomach early Thursday in Pittsburgh’s Brighton Heights neighborhood, according to the city’s department of public safety.
Officers were called to the 3400 block of Fleming Avenue just before 3:15 a.m. for reports of an aggravated assault, police said.
EMS personnel took the teen to the hospital in critical but stable condition, and he was taken into surgery.
A man who did not live in the home reportedly ran away before authorities arrived, police said.
Police processed evidence at the scene. Detectives will be investigating.
Pittsburgh man sentenced in connection to Dormont bank robbery
A Pittsburgh man was sentenced to three years and one month in prison in connection to a bank robbery in Dormont last year.
U.S. District Judge Marilyn J. Horan sentenced Ahmed Asiri to three years and one month in prison Wednesday on a charge of bank robbery, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office of Western Pennsylvania. Asiri was ordered to one year of supervised release following his sentence, and he must also pay restitution to Dollar Bank.
On Dec. 7, Asiri robbed the Dollar Bank at 3029 West Liberty Ave., and stole $20,000. Police later recovered the money.
New Brighton man stabbed mother, brother, police say
A Beaver County man is behind bars after police say he stabbed his mother and brother Tuesday night at an apartment complex, according to Tribune-Review news partner WTAE.
The station reports that a bloodied Michael James North, 42, of New Brighton had a knife and was banging on a bedroom door when investigators arrived at the apartment Wednesday night. While hiding in a bedroom, North’s mother called 911 and said he was attacking her and her other son with a knife, according to WTAE.
The mother was stabbed in her shoulder and taken to the hospital, the station reports. North’s brother was flown to the hospital with stab wounds on his side, head and armpit, and he also had a bite mark on his back.
It’s unclear what led to the incident.
North faces charges including aggravated assault and reckless endangerment. He was denied bond and is currently being held at the Beaver County Prison.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled Oct. 6 before Judge Eileen M. Conroy.
City police warn of scam calls
Pittsburgh police say a recent wave of scam phone calls in which the caller impersonates an officer and tries to solicit funds over the phone, claiming unpaid citation costs.
Through social media posts, police said that the scam programs the incoming number to appear as though it’s coming from city police headquarters. The police will never ask for money, either over the phone or in person, for any reason, the statement said.
Those that receive a similar phone call should hang up and dial 911, or report the incident to their local police zone.
New Castle man gets 10 years in prison for drug trafficking
Ricardo Reeves, 45, of New Castle was sentenced to 10 years in prison in connection to fentanyl, heroin and cocaine trafficking, and for possessing a firearm while doing so, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Western District of Pennsylvania.
Reeves was sentenced Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Schwab. Once out of prison, Reeves will serve four years of supervised release.
Earlier this year, Reeves pleaded guilty to possessing with the intent to distribute 40 grams or more of a mixture containing fentanyl and heroin, and cocaine and cocaine base; and also possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. He was initially released on bond after he was indicted for these crimes, but his bond was revoked after he was caught trafficking more fentanyl and cocaine while on bond, according to the Department of Justice.
