1 hospitalized in Homestead shooting

A man was hospitalized Wednesday morning after being shot in the back in Homestead, Allegheny County Police said.

The non-fatal shooting was reported at about 4:20 a.m. in the 1000 block of West Street, county police spokesman Jim Madalinsky said. First responders said they found a man, who police did not name, with a single gunshot wound to his back.

The victim was taken to a local hospital in stable condition, Madalinsky said. County police detectives are investigating.

Beaver County man killed in crash

A Beaver County man was killed in a motor vehicle crash Tuesday in Crescent Township.

The crash happened a little before 3:15 p.m. at McGovern Boulevard and Purdy Road, according to TribLive news partner WTAE.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office said Gary Kunder, 42, of Rochester died after being taken to the hospital.

There were no reports of additional injuries, WTAE reported. Crescent Township police are investigating the crash.


Police say teen assaulted staffer at Greensburg school

Pennsylvania State Police arrested a 16-year-old Scottdale girl for assaulting a staff member at Pressley Ridge Day School Greensburg.

It was unknown what injuries the victim, who police identified as Maria Pitonyak, 41, of Mt. Pleasant, suffered at the school along Bovard Luxor Road.

The assault took place at about 9 a.m. Jan. 9, state police said. Police did not name the student.

The facility in Greensburg is a private school offering small class sizes for students ages 5 to 21 with autism spectrum disorder or behavioral and mental health issues, according to its website. Each classroom is supported by a certified special education teacher, a behavioral health specialist, and a home community liaison.


Vehicle crashes into PennDOT dump truck

There were no injuries reported Tuesday morning after slick road conditions led a driver to crash his vehicle into a PennDOT dump truck in Butler County, state police said.

The crash happened at about 9:30 a.m. at the Sheetz on Franklin Street in Slippery Rock, police said.

The driver, identified as Malcom Henry, 24, of Pittsgrove, entered the Sheetz parking lot and “was unable to stop due to snowfall and slippery rock conditions,” police said. He struck the PennDOT truck, which was parked legally at a gas pump, and caused moderate damage to the vehicle’s rear end, including its sand spreader.

Henry was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, state police said.
