The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to deal with injuries in the bullpen, as left-hander Jose Hernandez was placed on the 15-day injured list and lefty Ryan Borucki was added before Sunday’s game at Milwaukee.
Hernandez, a rookie selected in the Rule 5 Draft, has a right calf strain. He was 0-1 with a 2.63 ERA and 1.02 WHIP with 28 strikeouts and six walks and a .220 batting average against in 27 1/3 innings.
Hernandez joins righties Colin Holderman (right wrist) and Wil Crowe (right shoulder) and lefties Rob Zastryzny (left forearm) and Jarlin Garcia (nerve injury) as relievers on the injured list.
Borucki, 29, was selected from Triple-A Indianapolis, where he had eight scoreless appearances. Borucki started the season with Triple-A Iowa in the Chicago Cubs system, before being selected by the Cubs on April 30. He was designated for assignment May 2.
The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Borucki has a 10-9 record, 4.45 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 96 career major-league games, including 19 starts for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2019-20 before moving to the bullpen. He split last season between the Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners. Borucki’s last 77 appearances have come in relief, where he is 6-2 with a 4.66 ERA.
The Pirates’ 40-man roster is now full.
