It was a good time for the Penn-Trafford hockey team to take a break.
With four games left in the regular season, the Warriors and Latrobe sit on top of Class 2A with 39 points. Latrobe has played one less game. Fox Chapel is third with 34 points and Erie Prep is fourth with 29 points.
“There is a logjam at the top,” Penn-Trafford coach Brian Zagorac said. “We’ve had a couple quality wins the last two months, and with four games left, we’re only focused on the next game.”
The Warriors have not played since Jan. 14 when they defeated Norwin. The next game is Jan. 30 at Armstrong.
The remaining games are all at home (Palmer Imaging Arena) against Hempfield (Feb. 3), Latrobe (Feb. 10) and Fox Chapel (Feb. 17).
Latrobe and Fox Chapel own wins against the Warriors.
“Both are very good and well coached,” Zagorac said. “They have strong systems. They are two great teams.”
But Zagorac said his concern is the team playing its best when the playoffs begin. The Warriors have qualified for the Penguins Cup and now are fighting for seeding.
“We were the eighth seed last year and made it to the finals,” Zagorac said. “So seeding isn’t all that important. We proved that last year.”
Penn-Trafford has been steadily improving.
It has three solid goaltenders, a strong defense and three lines capable of scoring goals.
The goalies are Tyler Funk, Carson Weishorn and Jackson Narchus. Funk has recorded four shutouts.
“I feel we have three No. 1 goalies,” Zagorac said. “The players in front of the goalies also have been playing well.”
Captains Cam Kiste and Gavin Paterson have been physical and shown leadership, according to Zagorac. Kiste is a three-time PIHL all-star.
Kiste has also found the back of the net. He scored 12 goals and added 14 assists. His hat trick against Norwin rallied to Warriors to a win.
The Warriors also have three scoring lines.
“Again, we don’t have a No. 1 unit,” Zagorac said. “They are all capable lines that can score.”
Aiden Drotos leads the Warriors with 14 goals and 15 assists. He’s on a line with center T.J. Ferguson and wing Robert Thatcher. Ferguson has four goals and four assists, and Thatcher has nine goals and 12 assists.
Roman Catello centers a line with wings Ben Zierski and Marco Ferraccio. Catello has seven goals and five assists, Zierski four goals and eight assists and Ferraccio five goals and 13 assists.
Kyler Doran centers a line with wings Brock Bienemann and Drew Hall. Bienemann has 13 goals and 15 assists, Doran has two goals and 16 assists and Hall has seven goals and three assists.
“We have guys playing at a high level,” Zagorac said. “The lines are starting to jell. That’s a good problem to have.”
Zagorac was one of the coaches for the midseason all-star game. The Warriors originally had five players chosen, but Funk and Drotos were set to miss the game because they’ll be in Texas with their travel team.
Representing the Warriors are Kiste, Bienemann and Doran.
