Dan Moore remained at left tackle at practice Thursday, with rookie Broderick Jones shifting to the right side to fill in for the concussed Chuks Okorafor.
It was the second day in a row that Moore remained at his familiar position for the Pittsburgh Steelers while Jones made the transition. Jones worked exclusively at left tackle in training camp, so does the shift this week mean Okorafor is close to returning ahead of the Steelers’ matchup Monday night against the Cleveland Browns?
Or does it mean the Steelers want Jones to get some versatility by playing out of position?
Moore thinks the latter could be in play.
“He seems a lot more natural at right than I do,” Moore said Thursday. “I don’t think it’s that much of a transition for him. He seems to be taking it on a lot better than I was.”
When Okorafor exited in the fourth quarter of the season-opening 30-7 loss against San Francisco, Moore moved to right tackle, and Jones made his NFL debut on the left side. On those four snaps, quarterback Kenny Pickett was sacked twice with pressure coming from the right side each time.
Moore played left tackle in college — as did Jones — and has remained there in his first three NFL seasons.
“Obviously, it helps his development as a young tackle,” Moore said about Jones playing right tackle. “For us taking reps off the guys and being one snap away from playing if a guy goes down, I think that’s huge, too.”
Pro Football Focus gave Moore the lowest grade of any tackle in pass-rush situations. He also allowed an NFL-high nine pressures.
“We look at the negatives. We know we have to get better,” Moore said. “We have to evaluate the performance as an offense and go from there. We don’t worry about what anyone else thinks.”
