With summer in full swing, some are planning a traditional summer grill with the family but for vegetarians and pescetarians (who also enjoy seafood), these gatherings can mean limited options and the possibility of going home with a grumbling tummy.
Here are five restaurants in the Pittsburgh area that have outdoor dining and great meat-free options:
SoFresh, Downtown
While this restaurant may not have its own outdoor seating, SoFresh is located in PPG Place, which offers a plethora of outdoor tables with umbrellas. You might even feel a cool breeze or little splash from the fountain featured at PPG Place.
SoFresh offers everything from warm bowls to salads to wraps to smoothies and juices and has several vegetarian and pescetarian options, including proteins like salmon, shrimp and wild caught ahi. All items on the menu are minimally seasoned with sea salt and pepper and are even gluten free unless noted.
There also is a SoFresh location in Shadyside. Check out both location’s full menus here.
Kaya, Strip District
The cuisines of Kaya are inspired by the sea, sun and culinary customs of the Caribbean Islands, South America, the Pacific and beyond. Not only does this Strip District restaurant offer vegetarian and pescetarian options for meals but appetizers as well.
The refreshing cucumber gazpacho soup gives the pallet a cleanse before some treats like corn and lentil beignets, crispy tofu and yuzu shrimp ceviche.
Main courses vary from tacos to full pieces of fish and sides. There are even fish sticks and vegetable quesadillas for kids. Vegan options include avocado bahn mi tacos and carrot and cauliflower paella.
Outdoor seating is limited but perfect for a traditional summer meal. You can find Kaya’s full menu here.
Double Wide Grill, South Side
The former gas station turned sports bar and grill, Double Wide Grill offers beef brisket, beers and vegetarian and vegan options. Featuring wood-fire barbeque with a large patio of tables and umbrellas, Double Wide Grill offers a one-of-a-kind experience.
Menu highlights include seitan wings, cheese steaks and pastrami made from vegan wheat and a variety of beyond burgers from Hawaiian to avocado.
