Etna Council accepted, “with regrets,” the resignation of longtime member Megan Tuñón at its Jan. 21 meeting.
Tuñón, who has served on council since 2018, submitted her resignation earlier this month because of her “increasing duties” as executive director of the Etna Community Organization. That organization will oversee the construction of the Etna Center for Community, a mixed-use community center and library set to break ground early this year.
Though she said she “feels a lot of gratitude” toward the community and her colleagues for her time on council, Tuñón said devoting her full attention to ECO should open “lots of great avenues.”
“It was a really big honor to serve the community in that way,” she said.
After six years as a council member, she said she hopes her successor is someone who wants Etna to “thrive” and who will consider its “diverse opinions and needs.”
Council President David Becki said he appreciated Tuñón’s support over the years, saying she always “wore three or four hats.”
“She’ll be greatly missed,” Becki said. “She did a lot for this community.”
Tuñón represented Etna’s First Ward, leaving council to fill her seat with an appointee to serve until the end of the year. The new council member must be registered to vote in Etna’s First Ward and have lived there for more than a year.
The deadline for applications is Feb. 7, and council voted to conduct interviews with candidates on Feb. 13.
