Another new business is moving into Riverview Plaza in New Kensington.

A Dollar Tree will fill the space that, until recently, housed Altmeyer’s, according to plans filed with the city.

Altmeyer’s, a more than 80-year-old, family-owned bed, bath and home goods store, filed for bankruptcy in July 2022 and started a liquidation sale in November.

A newly built Aldi grocery store opened in the plaza along Tarentum Bridge Road in March. The store stands on part of the footprint of a Kmart department store, which was torn down after closing in January 2019.

A Modwash car wash is set to be built across from Aldi in the corner of the plaza. A former Family Video storefront remains vacant.

Other plaza businesses are Staples, Verizon, Rey Azteca and Quest Diagnostics.

According to New Kensington officials, Dollar Tree applied and has been approved for a building permit, but it has not been issued, as the company had not yet paid for it or picked it up.

A Dollar Tree representative did not respond to requests for comment.

The Altmeyer’s space is empty, with no work being done.

According to the plans submitted to the city, the store would be just under 10,000 square feet.

Dollar Tree currently has nine stores within 10 miles of New Kensington, according to the company’s website. They include two in Lower Burrell, at the former Save-A-Lot off Logans Ferry Road near Parnassus and in the Lower Burrell Shopping Center; at the Pittsburgh Mills in Frazer; at Highlands Mall in Harrison; at River Town Shopping Center in Verona; and in Apollo.

Dollar Tree, based in Chesapeake, Va., operates 16,340 stores across 48 states and five Canadian provinces as of Jan. 28. Stores operate under Dollar Tree, Family Dollar and Dollar Tree Canada.

For its 2022 fiscal year, the company reported consolidated net sales of $28.32 billion, a 7.6% increase over the previous year. Dollar Tree same-store sales increased 9%, while Family Dollar same-store sales increased 2.4%.

Its gross profit increased 15.5% to $8.92 billion.

In 2022, the company opened 464 new stores, relocated 120 stores and closed 205 stores. Nearly 800 Family Dollar stores were renovated.

The company is expecting its consolidated net sales for the 2023 fiscal year to range from $29.9 billion to $30.5 billion.

The discount retail chain previously was known for everything in its stores costing $1. In November 2021, Dollar Tree announced it was increasing prices for the majority of its products to $1.25 because of the rising cost of goods and freight.

The company said the price increases are permanent.
