Chances are, Morton’s the Steakhouse in the Dominion Building along Liberty Avenue isn’t one of your first choices. Maybe it should be. We know what you’re thinking: This is not the time for a steak. But one of the best-kept secrets in town is Morton’s Bar 12-21 menu. Named for the first Morton’s, which opened Dec. 12, 1978, in Chicago, it features “Bar Bites” — small, miniature plates that go well with a variety of beverages. Start with the Three Prime Cheeseburgers ($10). Using prime beef and topped with cheddar cheese, tomato slices and onion, they are a universe apart from the burgers served at chains — and, as Martha Stewart would say, that’s a good thing. If cheeseburgers are not your thing, perhaps Four Petite Filet Mignon Sandwiches on miniature buns ($10) would be more suitable. The filet mignon is lean and rare, and a dollop of mustard adds a bit of zest. What are burgers and sandwiches without fries• Morton’s serves an exotic version of “pommes frites” using melted blue cheese and crushed red pepper. It sounds a bit adventurous, but trust us, once you try the Blue Cheese French Fries ($8), you’ll be tempted to swear off cheddar, American or nacho cheese varieties. The Iceberg Wedge Bites ($9) sound a bit tame in comparison to other items on the menu. But these crisp servings of lettuce, served with bits of tomato, egg, bacon and blue cheese dressing, provide a nice counterpoint to the meatier offerings. Now here’s the thing, Morton’s might not be what comes to mind when one thinks of inexpensive dining. But if you dine during Power Hour — from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 to 11 p.m. Mondays through Fridays in the clubby, collegial atmosphere of Morton’s bar — all of the above items are just $5 apiece. Other items include Chicken Goujonettes ($8), crispy fried chicken strips with mustard mayonnaise, Miniature Crab Cakes ($12) and Jumbo Lump Crab, Spinach and Artichoke Dip ($11) served with toasted French bread croutons. All are a mere $5 during Power Hour. Morton’s the Steakhouse is in Dominion Tower, 625 Liberty Ave., Suite 180, Downtown. Restaurant hours: 5:30-11 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays, 5-10 p.m. Sundays. Details: 412-261-7141.
