Joanna Stillwagon showed up early on the night she was to be honored with the Fred Funari Award of Distinction at the annual dinner meeting of Mental Health America of Westmoreland County. “She came to help decorate on a night that’s honoring her. Who does that?â€? asked MHAWC executive director Laurie Barnett Levine, a member of the special events committee with Stillwagon. Joanna has been married to Richard Stillwagon for 46 years, and the couple has two children and nine grandchildren. She is a retired high-school art teacher and artist who lends her talents to benefit communities and organizations. “She’s always there for us when we need her,â€? Barnett Levine said. “She’s an inspiration. She’s involved in so many projects to help the less fortunate.â€? New York documentary filmmaker Kathy Leichter was keynote speaker at the 53rd annual event held Oct. 20 at the Ramada Hotel and Conference Center in Hempfield. Leichter once worked for WQED and “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.â€? Her movie, “Here One Day,â€? is a story about mental illness, suicide and family and the initiative to reduce stigma and provide support and education. Mental Health America of Westmoreland County board president Christine Vitale welcomed guests and presided over business, while Josie Funari and Molly Robb Shimko coordinated presentation of the Funari Award.
