Westmoreland County officials remained mum Wednesday on the Oct. 11 death of a Westmoreland County Prison inmate from Ligonier who was found unresponsive in his cell.
The victim, Charles Madden Jr., 53, had been in the county jail since he was arrested by Ligonier Valley Police on Oct. 4 in Ligonier Township on charges of burglary, criminal trespass into a structure and driving under the influence.
Madden was being held in the jail without bond. He had a preliminary hearing scheduled for Wednesday morning before Derry District Judge Kelly Tua Hammers.
Coroner Tim Carson said in a statement that out of respect for Madden and his family, he would not release any more information. Carson said an autopsy was conducted and the cause and manner of death are pending its results.
