A Harrison man is dead after he was struck Friday evening by a vehicle near the Sheetz convenience store in Harrison.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Gary Rhebb, 74, of Harrison’s Natrona Heights neighborhood.

Harrison Police Sgt. Justin Bouch said the victim was struck by a vehicle traveling toward the Heights Plaza on Freeport Road near the Sheetz and CVS.

County police said a vehicle struck Rhebb about 6:18 p.m. “in the intersection of Freeport Road and California Avenue.” He was dead at the scene.

Bouch said the driver, who police did not identify, remained on scene and is cooperating with police.

County detectives are investigating.

Police blocked off both Freeport Road and Broadview Boulevard, which runs parallel to Freeport Road, between Argonne Drive and Idaho Avenue.

A medical helicopter had been summoned to the scene but was later canceled.

Erin King, a supervisor at the Sheetz, said she was outside at the back of the business when the crash occurred.

“I heard people honking super loud, people were yelling and screaming,” she said.

An officer who happened to be at Sheetz responded quickly, she said.

King said she went back inside the store and handled an order at the drive-thru, and while doing that she watched emergency responders administer CPR to the victim.

King said she’s been a supervisor at the Freeport Road location for a few years and witnessed several accidents, including one a few months ago where a customer attempted to pull onto the roadway and was hit by a driver headed toward Tarentum.

“Most people speed through here right out front,” King said.
