Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire Battalion Chief John P. Walsh died Wednesday night while in command of a structure fire, according to the firefighters union.
Cara Cruz, a public safety spokeswoman, said Walsh had a medical emergency while in command of a fire in the city’s East Hills neighborhood.
The union posted a tribute to Walsh on social media.
“His unwavering passion for the job, his courageous service, and his remarkable leadership over 37 dedicated years will never be forgotten,” the union representing city firefighters wrote in a social media post. “Chief Walsh embodied the very best of what it means to serve and protect.”
This is a developing story.
