Allegheny County residents will begin receiving 2025 real estate tax bills this week, but deadline information in the enclosed bulletins is wrong because of last-minute changes, according to County Treasurer Erica Rocchi Brusselars.
On Tuesday night, Allegheny County Council voted to extend property tax deadlines by about a month, including the last day to receive a 2% discount and the first date of the delinquency period for payment.
The measure passed unanimously after it was introduced last Friday; extending deadlines has become common procedure since the covid-19 pandemic.
But the tax bills had already been printed in December with the old deadlines, Audrey Wells, a spokesperson for the treasurer’s office, said.
Wells said there are no plans to reprint and resend updated hard copies of the bulletin.
Under the new deadlines, the last day to file for the 2% discount is April 30. The regular deadline is May 31, and the delinquency period begins on June 1.
On that date, a one-time 5% penalty will be levied, with an additional 1% interest added for each month the taxes continue to be unpaid.
Any payments postmarked by the listed dates will be considered timely.
“Our team has been working really diligently to make sure that the bills get out as soon as possible to all of the residents,” Wells said.
All bills should be in the mail by Friday.
Taxpayers should also be aware that hard copies of receipts will not automatically be mailed out, except in the case of those who use the Senior Citizen Tax Relief Program.
According to the treasurer’s office, this is a new cost-saving measure that will be implemented this year.
