Plum launches 2025 military banner program

Plum is launching its 2025 military banner program to honor those who have served in the military or who are currently serving.

Orders include a single-sided, 2-foot by 3-foot, 18-ounce vinyl banner to be displayed along Mike Thomas Way from Memorial Day through Veterans Day for two years, after which they will be retired and remain property of the borough.

There is space for 56 banners, with 22 spaces still available as of Feb. 18, according to the borough. Applications are taken on a first-come, first-served basis.

Banners cost $145 plus tax. Orders are due by April 30.

County Republican committee chair candidate to speak in Plum

The Plum Borough Republican Committee will meet at 7 p.m. Feb. 27 at the Plum Senior Community Center, 499 Center-New Texas Road.

Jason Richey, a former candidate for governor who is running for chairman of the Republican Committee of Allegheny County, will be the featured guest speaker.

PALS meets slated for March 5

The Plum Area Ladies Society (PALS) will hold its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. on March 5 at the Plum Community Center. The speaker, Liz Mims, from Dress for Success, will introduce members to the mission and operation of Dress for Success.

The monthly service project is to donate items to the organization. Needed items include personal care products, such as Black hair care products; shampoo/conditioner; body wash; dental hygiene products; deodorant; body lotion; readers/sunglasses; tampons and pads; cosmetics; new underwear; bras; socks; gently used fashion scarves; handbags; jewelry; umbrellas; belts; and shoes.

Members may pay $30 for the annual banquet, to be held May 17 at Tepache.

The Ladies Day Out will be dinner at Golden Goblet at 4 p.m. on March 22, followed by a game of “left, right, center.” Sign-ups will be at the meeting.

PALS is a service/social organization open to residents of Plum, Penn Hills, Monroeville and nearby communities. Newcomers are welcome to attend a meeting, always held at 6:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month from Septemeber through April, at the community center.

Rotary offering need-based scholarships

The Bob Williams Rotary Memorial Scholarship Program is accepting applications from current high school seniors and GED students for 2024-25.

This year, eight need-based scholarships at $5,000 each will be awarded.

The scholarships are open to students in Allegheny and Beaver counties, as well as those attending New Kensington- Arnold, Kiski Area and Burrell Area high schools and The Kiski School in Westmoreland County. Vocational students, GED students and those attending parochial, charter and private schools also are eligible.

Students must have a 2.5 or higher grade-point average and must complete an essay highlighting their community/school service.

The deadline to apply is Feb. 28. Applications postmarked after that date will not be accepted.

Entries welcome for student poetry contest

Ligonier Valley Writers is accepting entries for its 34th annual student poetry contest.

Students in grades four through 12 who live in Western Pennsylvania are welcome to enter. Cash prizes are awarded in each of nine categories for first-, second- and third-place. There are no entry fees.

Group offers support for weight loss

All are welcome to join the men and women at Oakmont TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) who are learning how to lose weight.

With in-person meetings, rewards, support and encouragement, we gain knowledge of healthy eating and exercise.

You may visit with no obligation Tuesdays at 5:45 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1261 Pennsylvania Ave. in Oakmont. Weigh-in is private followed by a brief business meeting, sharing time, and educational program all ending by 7:15.
