The Shaler Area Education Foundation is hosting its annual Taste of Shaler Area fundraiser from 6 to 8 p.m. April 5 at Scott Primary School, 705 Scott Ave.
Individual tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door, if available. For $200, patrons can reserve a table for eight guests.

Real ID days set for spring
The Allison Park Driver and Photo License Center, located in the Duncan Manor Shopping Center at 1701 Duncan Ave., McCandless, will host a Real ID Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 14 and May 5.
Applications for Real IDs will be the only services available during the event. No other driver’s license business will be conducted. Starting May 7, residents will need a Real ID-compliant license or identification card, passport or military ID to board a domestic commercial flight, enter a military base or enter certain federal facilities.
PennDOT will need to verify your identity, your Social Security number and your Pennsylvania residency, even if you already have a Pennsylvania driver’s license or photo ID card.

August Wilson center seeks artwork for upcoming exhibit
The August Wilson African American Cultural Center is inviting artists of African descent living in the Greater Pittsburgh area to submit work for Being/Seen, a group exhibition opening in May.
Selected artwork will be displayed at the center’s first-floor galleries, including the Victoria Gallery and Yvonne Cook Family Regional Gallery. The group exhibition will run concurrently with “Determined to Be: The Sculpture of John Rhoden,” the first major retrospective of prolific 20th century African American sculptor John W. Rhoden (1916-2001).
Artists may submit new or existing work that reflects their personal experience or perspective on Being/Seen.
Emerging, early-career and established artists 18 and older from Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Lawrence, Washington and Westmoreland counties are encouraged to submit work. All mediums will be considered.
The deadline to apply is April 6, and the submission fee is a $5 to $15 suggested donation.

Nonperishable food items sought to help neighbors in need
The community is invited to “fill a truck” with nonperishable food items to help neighbors who struggle with food insecurity.
The collection benefiting the Bread of Life Food Pantry in Etna will take place from 8 a.m. to noon April 13 at Glenshaw Presbyterian Church, 300 Glenn Ave., Shaler.
The pantry serves as a critical community resource in Etna and Shaler. It provides food and basic necessities to individuals and families in need, as well as senior boxes to people 60 and older.
A 2024 report from the United States Department of Agriculture reports a significant increase in food insecurity with 47.4 million people affected in 2023, including 13.8 million children. Inflation and the end of pandemic benefits are major contributors, disproportionately impacting single parent households and communities of color.

Early bird rate on pool passes available through April 15
An early bird discount of 5% is available through April 15 for anyone interested in purchasing a season pass for the Crawford Swimming Pool in Shaler.
If you purchased a season pass last year and your account has not changed, you can renew online and use the same passes from last summer.

Regular prices for residents are $220 per family, $185 per couple, $120 for an adult 18- 64, $95 for a child 6-17, $30 for children 2-5 and free for those younger than 2. Passes are free for those 65 and older who have been a Shaler resident for at least 15 years; it costs $25 for any senior who doesn’t meet that requirement.
Regular prices for nonresidents are as follows: $375 per family, $325 per couple, $195 for an adult 18-64, $145 for a child 6-17, $125 for a child 2-5 and free for those younger than 2. For a nonresident senior 65 and older, the cost is $105.

Vendors sought for Millvale market days
The Millvale Community Development Corporation is seeking local vendors for its new spring and summer market days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 26 and July 26.
There is no vendor cost or application fee to participate.
The spring and summer market days are building on the success of the annual Small Business Saturday held in the borough.
Similar to the November event, the communitywide markets will showcase more than 40 small businesses. They will include artists, makers, bakers, farmers and creators set up throughout Millvale’s business district.
“We are looking to support local artisans from Millvale and the surrounding areas of Pittsburgh,” said Dee Schlotter, member of the MCDC Small Business Committee. “Millvale is filled with local businesses and owners who absolutely love this community. We are seeking out vendors who want to be part of these special inaugural Market Days for Millvale.”

Spring used book sale set
The Friends of Shaler North Hills Library is gearing up for its spring book sale April 25-27 in the community room of the library, 1822 Mt. Royal Blvd.
A preview night will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. April 25. The sale will continue from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 26 and 27.
The sale will feature books, audiobooks, DVDs, puzzles, games and more for patrons of all ages.

Run for the Titan Trail fundraiser open to community
Shaler Area Elementary School is hosting its 13th annual Run for the Titan Trail 5K/1-mile Walk/Tot Run on April 26.
The 5K Run and 1-mile Walk will begin at Shaler Area Elementary School, 700 Scott Ave., circle through neighborhood streets and end back at the school.
Prizes will be given for male and female age groups ranging from under 8 to 61 and older.
The Run for the Titan Trail raises money to help fund the elementary students’ year-end trip to Millvale Riverfront Park and Three Rivers Heritage Trail. Voluntary reading in the school has increased exponentially since the creation of Blazing a Titan Trail: A Reading Adventure, a schoolwide incentive program for the fourth through sixth graders. Through the program, which was developed by a volunteer committee of teachers, librarians, parents and administrators, students strive to read 18 books throughout the school year to attend the trip.
The cost for the 5K Run and 1-mile Walk is $20 through April 7; the price will increase to $25 after that date. The cost for the Tot Run for ages 2 to 7 is $10, and registration will run through the day of the race. Students will receive a $5 discount, and the discount will be applied once the age group is selected during registration.
Discounted pricing also is available for group registrations of four or five participants.

Cash bash to aid Millvale, Reserve firefighters
The Millvale and Reserve volunteer fire departments are hosting their Annual Cash Bash from 6 to 10 p.m. May 3 at the Mt. Troy Ballroom, 33 Lonsdale St.
Tickets are $25 each for one number and includes free food and refreshments.
Tickets must be presented for entry, and only 1,000 of them will be sold.
Winners do not need to be present to win, and all winners will be notified of their prizes.

The Cherry City Volunteer Fire Company will host its fourth annual Night at the Races on April 5 at the station, 309 Davis Ave. in Shaler.
The fundraiser is for 21 and older.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the first race will start at 7.
Tickets are $35 in advance and $45 at the door. The ticket price includes general admission, food, beer and soda.
Attendees can purchase a horse and name it for $10 during a race.

Free tax help available through AARP Foundation
Through April 14, the AARP Foundation will provide free tax assistance and preparation in Allegheny County through its Tax-Aide program.
Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest nationwide volunteer-based free tax preparation service. In 2024, the nearly 2 million taxpayers who used its services received more than $1 billion in income tax refunds.
Volunteers are trained and certified by the IRS each year to ensure they understand the latest changes to the U.S. and Pennsylvania Tax Code. The program e-files individual Federal, Pennsylvania and local EIT income tax returns and makes sure its clients claim the tax refund, credits and deductions earned.
Income tax returns will be prepared during one visit by appointment only, generally lasting an hour to 75 minutes. Walk-ins cannot be accommodated.
