Bridgeville officials say a bump-out planned on Bank Street, at its intersections with Gregg Avenue and Winfield Street, will calm traffic in that area.

PennDOT contractors and the borough are currently upgrading the wheelchair-accessible sidewalk ramps on Bank Street, said Manager Joe Kauer.

“As part of this project, they are also constructing bump-outs at the intersections of Gregg Avenue and Winfield Street,” Kauer said.

A bump-out extends a street curb and sidewalk into the roadway, narrowing the road at the intersection, Kauer said. The design aims to make pedestrians more visible to drivers by having an area with a shorter crossing distance.

“Additionally, bump-outs help protect parked vehicles along Bank Street by reducing the risk of cars encroaching into parking spaces,” Kauer said.

He said the project is part of the Bridgeville Active Transportation Plan, which aims to enhance walkability and create safer, more accessible streets for pedestrians.

The borough’s portion of the project is estimated to cost $100,000, Kauer said, which is being paid from its capital project fund.

The project is anticipated to be complete by early May.
