Seed lending

Community members looking to grow their own gardens have an extra resource up their sleeve this year — the Sewickley Public Library launched a new Seed Library program, creating a resource for finding, growing and sharing seeds.

The library partnered with the Big Sewickley Creek Watershed Association and the Bell Acres Environmental Advisory Council to allow visitors to “borrow” seeds for vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers, plant them at home, and then share the seeds from their plants at the end of the season with others.

To participate, community members can “borrow” seeds from the display in the library lobby. Everyone is encouraged to take only what you can plant this season. At the end of the growing season, participants are encouraged to save seeds from their plants and return them to the library to share. There is no cost, but returning seeds helps keep the program running.
