A Pine-Richland Middle School nurse is a contender for a statewide honor.
Michelle Schonbachler was recognized March 21 in State College as this year’s winner of the School Nurse Excellence Award for the southwest region of Pennsylvania from the Pennsylvania Association of School Nurses and Practitioners. Her colleagues nominated her in recognition of her service to students and staff.
“Michelle Schonbachler is a true role model, exemplifying a deep passion for her profession that inspires all certified school nurses across Pennsylvania,” said Anne-Marie Crawford, president of Pennsylvania Association of School Nurses and Practitioners.
Schonbachler is now eligible for the National Association of School Nurses 2026 Pennsylvania School Nurse of the Year award. The recipient will be chosen from the 2025 regional winners.
In addition to working as the middle school nurse, Schonbachler leads the district’s Health Services Department as an academic leadership council member, serving as the department liaison.
She has been a certified school nurse for 18 years and has experience in nursing and management and leadership roles before coming to Pine-Richland, working at the high school before moving to the middle school this year.
At Pine-Richland, she has written policies, regulations and management plans. She has created newsletters, public service announcements and posters promoting health and wellness. She is a member of the district’s food service advisory committee as well as the wellness, professional development oversight and K-12 health and safety committees.
Superintendent Brian Miller said he has worked with Schonbachler for 12 years.
“Throughout that entire time period, the adjectives that come to mind are ‘professional,’ ‘engaged’ and ‘teammate,’ ” he said. “Michelle provides care to students and adults and is an active partner with families. She is a true part of the overall school community. I will also be forever grateful for the above-and-beyond leadership and expertise she demonstrated through the pandemic response.”
