Eastern Regional Mon Valley could get 4th member
Braddock could soon join the Eastern Regional Mon Valley Police Department, according to WTAE.
Braddock Council on Tuesday voted to accept an offer to join the regional police force, which was established a year ago and includes the communities of East Pittsburgh, Rankin and North Braddock.
Braddock officials told WTAE that the merger would improve response times in the borough since there isn’t always an officer on duty with only two part-time officers.
The offer would have the regional department acquire Braddock’s two police cruisers and all policing equipment.
Man killed in turnpike police chase identified
Pennsylvania State Police identified Deshawn Dante Leeth, 30, of Ypsilanti, Mich., as the man who was shot and killed by police after leading them on a chase in a stolen car on the turnpike in Beaver County last week.
Ohio State Highway Patrol told WTAE that they responded to a single-vehicle rollover crash on the Ohio Turnpike around 5:30 p.m. Friday.
There, a trooper was assaulted by Leeth, who was walking on the shoulder, Ohio troopers say. A trooper tried to shock Leeth with a Taser but was unsuccessful, and an altercation broke out. Leeth stole an Ohio State Highway Patrol vehicle and began driving into Pennsylvania, WTAE reported.
Police chased him until the cruiser crashed and rolled onto its roof in North Sewickley Township, Beaver County. During an altercation, Leeth was shot and killed by police.
An investigation is ongoing.
