Plant sale to benefit library
Preorders are being accepted through May 3 for Northern Tier Library’s annual Plant & Garden Sale.
All proceeds benefit the library.
Choose from hundreds of annuals, herbs, hanging baskets and planters.
Pickup times will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 16 and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 17.

Orders can be prepaid by check, cash, Visa or Mastercard. Prepaid orders can be dropped off at the library or mailed to Northern Tier Library, 4015 Dickey Road, Richland, PA 15044.

Northland Tier Library is located at 4015 Dickey Road in Richland. Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and closed Sundays. The library can be reached at 724-449-2665 or northerntier library.org. Here are some upcoming programs:
• Read to a Furry Friend: 10 to 11:30 a.m. April 26
In three 30-minute sessions, children can practice their skills by reading to a dog or cat through this PAWtnership with Animal Protectors of Allegheny Valley. Friendly (and adoptable) dogs and cats are looking forward to listening to the stories told by your child. Children are welcome to bring their own book to read and a blanket to sit on. Each animal will be assigned to an adult shelter representative. Registration is required. Please only register the reader’s name as space is limited to seven readers in a time slot and include how many adults or others will be accompanying the reader.
• Makerspace Take-Home Kit: All day April 28
Teens are invited to pick up a take-home kit to make hot air balloon decoration. When you register, note which location you’d like to pick up your kit: at the Richland Center on Dickey Road or the Pine Center at the Pine Community Center. Registration is required by April 25.
• Cary Grant Comedy Classics: 7 to 9 p.m. April 29
Northern Tier Library, in partnership with the Pittsburgh Classic Movie Club, will show “Arsenic and Old Lace,” starring Cary Grant as the one sane member of a charmingly lunatic family in director Frank Capra’s classic screwball comedy from 1944. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided. Registration is requested. Mark your calendars: The May 20 showing will be the 1964 film ”Father Goose,” starring Grant as an aircraft spotter on an isolated island and Leslie Caron as a teacher of an all girls school in this romantic comedy set during World War II.
• Makerspace Take-Home Kit: All day April 21 and 28
Every Monday, teens can pick up a take-home kit at either the Richland or Pine library locations and enjoy the craft at home. The April 21 kit is button bracelets; the April 28 kit will feature a hot-air balloon decoration. Registration is required.
• Plant-Based Pittsburgh North: 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. April 23
Join Plant-Based Pittsburgh’s North Chapter to hear Dr. Uma Purighalla, a certified internal medicine and plant-based physician, present “Decoding Nutrition Labels: A Whole-Food, Plant-Based Perspective Rooted in Evidence-Based Medicine and Ayurveda.” Come and meet others who are learning and benefiting from plant-centered eating. Registration is required.
• The Weekly Craft: All day every Tuesday
Kids and adults are invited to pick up a take-home craft every Tuesday. Registration is required to account for supplies. Kits can be picked up at the Richland or Pine centers.
• Saturday Matinee: 1 to 4 p.m. May 10
Join us for a “Wicked”-ly good time at this free showing of the 2024 film, rated PG. Misunderstood Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and popular Galinda (Ariana Grande) become an unlikely pairing when they become friends at the university they both attend. However, after an encounter with the Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum), their lives are about to take very different paths. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided, and registration is required to account for supplies.
PINE CENTER
This satellite branch of Northland Tier Library is located in the Pine Community Center at 100 Pine Park Drive in Pine. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays; 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays; 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays; and closed Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Here are some upcoming programs:

Children of all ages are welcome to sing, move, read books and practice rhymes. Registration is required.
• Earth Day: 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 26
Join the Northern Tier Library on April 26 for a celebration of Earth and its many wonders as part of Pine Community Center’s Earth Day Event. The library will host a used book sale and offer crafts for kids. Librarians will be on duty to help you find all of your upcycling and environmental information needs as well as sign up new patrons for library cards. Due to space limitations, please bring any donations for the used book sale to the Richland location at 4015 Dickey Road.
• The Pine Needles: 4 to 5:30 p.m. May 1 and June 5
Yarn art enthusiasts of all skill levels are invited to gather on the first Thursday of every month. Beginners can learn how to knit or crochet. Experienced crafters are welcome to bring a project to work on. We’ll talk about life, books we’ve read and projects we’re always working on but may never finish. Registration is requested.
