A pair of local baseball sluggers have been swinging for the fences.

They were leading the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in home runs.

Seton Hill sophomore Jakob Haynes (Penn-Trafford) and IUP junior Elijah Dunn (Norwin) each had 10 homers heading into the weekend to share the top spot in the league leaders.

Haynes, a catcher and first baseman, was hitting .352 with a 1.245 OPS in 28 games for the Griffins (23-7, 9-3 PSAC West).

He had 22 RBIs and 25 runs scored. He hit three homers and drove in six runs in a win over IUP. His .391 average was eighth in the league, whereas his .870 slugging percentage ranked first.

Haynes’ 1.358 OPS was second in the PSAC, two spots ahead of Dunn, who has a pair of two-home run games.

Dunn, who a two-home run, five-RBI game against Slippery Rock, was leading the team with a .370 average and 29 RBIs in 27 games.

Eastern Michigan: Junior Ty Stecko (Norwin) is hitting .307 and leads the team with eight home runs. He also has 19 RBIs and 24 runs scored. He went 3 for 4 with three runs, a homer and four RBIs against Toledo.

Pitt-Greensburg: Junior Colin Solinski doubled, tripled and had two RBIs, and junior James Domer and sophomore Zachery Tyson had three hits each as the Bobcats downed Mount Aloysius, 6-1.

Saint Vincent: The Bearcats swept a doubleheader at home against Waynesburg.

Derek Hald went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and senior Kyle Belmont and grad student Alex Hess added two hits apiece in a 5-3 win in the opener.

Freshman Chuck Fontana (Penn-Trafford) also drove in a run.

In Game 2, junior Ben Hudson went 3 for 4 with a double and two runs, and junior Dylan Schmude had two hits, two steals and two RBIs in a 6-4 victory.

Seton Hill: Redshirt junior Ian Korn was named the PSAC West Pitcher of the Week. Korn tossed a one-hitter in a 2-0 win over Cal (Pa.). He struck out eight and did not issue a walk.

Waynesburg: Sophomore pitcher Mike McCready (Greensburg Central Catholic) earned a win, working two innings of relief in a 6-4 victory over Westminster.

Wrestling

Saint Vincent: Dom Nania (Hempfield), who helped to rekindle the wrestling program at SVC, resigned as coach after two seasons to pursue a career opportunity outside of sports.

Nania led SVC to a PAC title last year in the program’s return to the mat after 50 years away. The team went 5-7 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

SVC (5-7, 3-1) finished second this year.

Softball

Marist: Grad pitcher Kiley Myers (Latrobe) won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week. She tossed her second no-hitter of the season and went 3-0 with a 0.91 ERA and 0.91 WHIP in 15 1/3 innings.

She won both games of a doubleheader against Canisius. Only an error kept her from a perfect game as the Red Foxes won 8-0.

Ohio: Senior catcher Emma Hoffner (Hempfield) picked up her 100th career RBI as the Bobcats fell to Toledo, 8-5. She went 2 for 4 with a run in the game.

Penn State: Senior Haylie Brunson (Mt. Pleasant) hit a solo home run to help the Nittany Lions set a single-season team record for homers with 54.

Brunson was tied for the team lead in homers with 10 and had 21 for her career.

Pitt-Greensburg: Sophomore Makenzie Lang went 3 for 3 with a double and two runs, and senior Kylie Karns (Burrell) added three hits and two RBIs in a 13-5 victory over Mt. Aloysius.

Robert Morris: Senior outfielder Jess Matheny (Southmoreland) hit her third home run of the season, scored twice and drove in two runs in an 11-3 win over Youngstown State.

Redshirt junior outfielder Courtney Poulich (Mt. Pleasant) had two hits, including a triple, and four RBIs for the Colonials.

Seton Hill: The Griffins (19-13, 8-8) picked up an important sweep in the PSAC West while running their winning streak to four.

They doubled down against Cal (Pa.) by scores of 10-2 (5 innings) and 8-0.

In the first game, freshman Shelby Telegdy picked up the win and had two hits, senior Brooke Cleland (Penn-Trafford) went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs and junior Abby Smearman doubled and knocked in two runs.

Sophomore Lacey Lynn tossed a five-inning no-hitter, Kassidy Wittig had two hits, two runs and three RBIs and senior Bre Athey and freshman Taylor Schmitt each drove in two for the Griffins in the second game.

Lynn was named the PSAC West Pitcher of the Week.

Slippery Rock: Freshman Kayla Williams (Latrobe) picked up the second win of her career, allowing one hit and no runs in three innings of relief in an 8-7 victory over Edinboro.

Westminster: Freshman pitcher Cheyenne Piper (Ligonier Valley) picked up her 10th win of the season, also posting her fourth shutout of the season, in a 2-0 victory over Grove City. Piper gave up three hits, struck out eight and did not walk anyone.

Women’s track & field

Michigan: Sophomore Liz Tapper (Hempfield) threw a personal-best 17.29 meters in the shot put to break the program record and finish third at the 44 Farms Team Invitational in Texas.

Tapper now holds Michigan records in the outdoor and indoor shot put.

Waynesburg: Senior Megan Barry (Norwin) finished seventh in the javelin with a throw of 35.12 meters at the Westminster Invitational.

Men’s track & field

Grove City: Grad student Gabe Dunlap (Penn-Trafford) helped the 400-meter relay to a second-place finish at the Westminster Invitational. The foursome finished in 43.30 seconds.

Seton Hill: Coaching newcomer Raven Haston was added to the staff as an assistant to Jamal Johnson.

Haston, an Obama Academy graduate and four-time PIAA qualifying sprinter, ran in college at Winston Salem State and UNC Pembroke.

Westminster: Junior Gino Piraino (Franklin Regional) finished fifth in the 400 hurdles in a personal-best time of 1:40 at the Westminster Invitational.

Men’s volleyball

Grove City: Sophomore Andrew Kessler (Penn-Trafford) was named to the PAC all-tournament team. Grove City finished second behind Thiel, which won 3-0. The Wolverines made the finals in their first year as a varsity program.

Penn State: Senior Will Kuhns (Hempfield) had 17 kills and five blocks as the Nittany Lions outlasted George Mason, 3-2, for their fourth straight win.

Saint Vincent: The Bearcats registered a sweep in the PAC quarterfinals, defeating Geneva, 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-20), to reach the semifinals for the third straight season.

Freshman Jackson Genicola (Norwin) had 27 points and 10 digs, Shawn McSwiggen had 14 kills and Zebadiah Wyant added 10 kills in the win.

The Bearcats lost to Thiel in the semifinals 3-0.

Men’s lacrosse

Saint Vincent: Junior Liam McCall reached a career milestone for the Bearcats with his 100th career point.

McCall leads the Bearcats with 48 points (26 goals, 22 assists).

Seton Hill: Senior Braden Lockyer had two goals and four assists to propel the Griffins (11-1, 6-0 GMAC) to a 17-6 win against Tiffin.

Washington & Jefferson: Junior midfielder Braden Petrarco (Norwin) scored three goals, and senior Austin Hopkins (Hempfield) had two turnovers as the Presidents fell to Bethany, 14-7.

Women’s lacrosse

Grove City: Sophomore Gwen Shilling (Franklin Regional) had a goal as the Wolverines ran their winning streak to six with a 14-2 victory over Saint Vincent.

Shilling had three goals and an assist in a 19-8 loss to Mount Union.

Seton Hill: Senior Grace Agnello had four goals and one assist, and junior Mila Udovicic added two goals and four assists as Seton Hill (8-4) defeated Daemen, 15-5.

Men’s tennis

Saint Vincent: Senior Jack Citrone became the program’s all-time leader in wins, posting No. 83, in a 6-1 win loss to Grove City. He won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.

He moved past Jon Oskin, who held the previous record of 82 wins.

Men’s golf

Grove City: Senior Luke Kimmich (Franklin Regional) shot 78 to place sixth individually and help the Wolverines win the Peter C. Rossin Memorial at Southpointe Golf Club.
