Norwin made it a clean sweep at the Tri-State Track and Field Coaches Association Championships at West Mifflin, cruising to boys and girls team titles.
Ryan Schiller won the 110- and 300-meter hurdles and helped the 1,600-meter relay to victory. His time of 38.85 seconds in the 300 hurdles is a school record.
Tyler Beck came in third, while Jeremiah Francis was fourth in the 300s. Francis also was fourth in the 110s.
Thomas Gaydos took fourth in the 1,600.
Gage Mamie was second in the triple jump, while Nicholas Bognar finished third in the long jump, and Callum Turner was third in the discus.
Melani Schmidt won the 400, and Annie Czajkowski was first in the 3,200 for the Lady Knights.
Addison Farrah was second behind Czajkowski in the race.
Schmidt finished second in the 200.
The Norwin girls ran their section winning streak to 38 with a 95-55 win over Hempfield, while the boys made it 25 straight in section with a 124-26 victory over the Spartans.
Both teams were 4-0 heading into the TSTCA meet.
Remembering ‘Pudge’
Norwin is mourning the death of Claude “Pudge” O’Neal, who coached track and field, soccer, football and wrestling in the district before retiring in 1999.
O’Neal died April 6 at age 84.
He was a 1959 Norwin and Cal (Pa.) graduate.
O’Neal was inducted into the Norwin Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017 as a wrestling team member.
Baseball tops Canon-McMillan
Trevor Vitsas went 3 for 4 with an RBI and Jake Knight drove in two runs as Norwin avenged a 4-3 loss to Canon-McMillan with a 4-3 victory in baseball Section 2-6A.
Brayden Wardzinski earned the pitching win, striking out four.
The Knights (5-6, 3-3) won the series by taking Game 3, 3-0, as Ethen Culbertson pitched a complete-game one-hitter with four strikeouts and one walk.
Jake Sincak had two RBIs for the Knights.
Softball scores 15
The Norwin softball team erupted for a season-high 15 runs in a 15-0 win over Mt. Lebanon in five innings.
Abbie Tellie tossed an abbreviated no-hitter with 11 strikeouts, while Isabella Deering went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Rachel Minteer homered and drove in a pair for the Knights (3-6, 3-3).
County schedule
The next event on the Westmoreland County Coaches Association schedule is the track and field championships, set for April 24 at Latrobe’s Memorial Stadium.

Eastern Michigan: Junior Ty Stecko was hitting .307 and leads the team with eight home runs. He also has 19 RBIs and 24 runs scored. He went 3 for 4 with three runs, a homer and four RBIs against Toledo.
Women’s track and field
Waynesburg: Senior Megan Barry finished seventh in the javelin with a throw of 35.12 meters at the Westminster Invitational.
Men’s volleyball
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats registered a sweep in the PAC quarterfinals, defeating Geneva, 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-20) to reach the semifinals for the third straight season. Freshman Jackson Genicola had 27 points and 10 digs. The Bearcats lost to Thiel in the semifinals, 3-0.
Men’s lacrosse
Washington & Jefferson: Junior midfielder Braden Petrarco scored three goals as the Presidents fell to Bethany, 14-7.
