Hearing the news about the president’s tariffs on other countries, especially for those on China and Japan, got me thinking about growing up in the ’50s and ’60s. My dad was injured while serving during World War II. He never asked for anything from the government after his discharge but was always cautious about buying anything from those countries. Toys included. If it wasn’t Americam made, it wasn’t bought.

We, like many of my neighbors and Americans, had our own gardens and canned our vegetables. We bought our milk and eggs, sweet corn and beef from local farmers or slaughterhouses, all American. We also had the sport of hunting. Back then it wasn’t for a set of antlers; it was for the meat.

Looking at all the items that are purchased from these countries instead of buying American made or grown makes me wonder where we’re headed. It was a simpler life back then. Maybe it’s time to go back to the ’50s and ’60s. Check those labels. Just a thought.
