Plum Council approves new batting cages
Plum Borough Council unanimously approved an application from the Plum Baseball and Softball Association to build new batting cages at the Plum Creek municipal ballfields.
The cages, which can hold up to four batters at a time in addition to a warm-up area for pitchers, will sit behind the right field fence of Field No. 1 at the park.
Borough public works will work with PBSA to determine how to run electricity to the cages, according to Plum manager Dave Soboslay.
Plum mayor honors Air Force JROTC students
Harry Schlegel, mayor of Plum, honored 13 Plum High School students who have participated in the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps.
The mayor’s proclamation praised the students’ activity in the community and school performance.
“You are the future leaders of Plum or whatever communities you end up in. So, again, thank you,” Schlegel said to the cadets.
Cornhole tournament to benefit Plum girls soccer team
The Plum girls high school soccer team is hosting a cornhole tournament fundraiser on April 26 at the Universal Banquet Hall in Penn Hills. The tournament is from 4 to 9 p.m. at the hall, 2240 Main Street, Penn Hills, PA 15235.
The cost is $60 per two-person team, and the BYOB event is for people 21 and older. There will be food, soda and water available, and there is a prize for the winning team.
Non-player guests are welcome to attend for $10. The event will include a 50/50 and raffles for prizes, such as signed sports memorabilia and more.

Oakmont Borough officials open job applications
Applications are open for seasonal park crew workers in Oakmont.
Borough officials are looking for workers available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. until November.
Duties include landscaping and maintenance like mowing or trimming, clean up or litter removal, minor repairs of park facilities and helping with special events or community recreation programs.
Applicants must be 21 or older and are expected to work in various weather conditions and to be able to work with others. While not required, prior landscaping experience would help complete the job efficiently.

A new event, “Coffee with the Mayor and Manager,” is scheduled for 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on April 22 at the Plum Borough Building, 2000 Mike Thomas Way.

Pet walk to benefit rescues planned for Boyce Park
The Wildflower Pet Walk, formerly the Friends of Jupiter Pet Walk, will be held April 27 at the Tanglewood Shelter on Pierson Run Road at Boyce Park.
The event starts at 9 a.m., with the walk beginning at 10, and will take place rain or shine. It includes a 1-mile walk, basket raffle, pet vendors, pet photos, food truck and local rescues. New dog and cat items will be collected for rescues.
Walk participants must register and sign a release. People may walk with or without a pet. All dogs must be leashed, licensed and vaccinated, and be people and dog friendly.
Proceeds benefit local rescues including Wildflowers Sanctuary, East Coast Bulldog Rescue, Homeless Cat Management Team and Bridges from Kuwait.

Plum Community Center seeking volunteers
The Plum Community Center is looking for people to donate their time as lunch servers in the center kitchen.
Hot lunches are served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. weekdays. Volunteers report at 10:30 a.m. to portion the side dishes and then serve lunch until 12:15 p.m.

Taste of Two Towns tickets available
Tickets are available for Oakmont Carnegie Library’s annual Taste of Two Towns event.
Interested parties can purchase tickets on the Oakmont Carnegie Library website for $65.
The event is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. on May 4. In addition to food and tasting selections from Oakmont and Verona, the event will feature door prizes and raffles. Proceeds will benefit the library.

Annual Oakmont plant sale
The Oakmont Garden Club is hosting its annual Spring Plant Sale.
The group will be set up in the Hoffstot’s parking lot on Allegheny Avenue in Oakmont from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 10.
The sale will include flats of flowers and vegetables and hanging baskets, annuals, arranged bowls of lettuce and herbs, perennials grown by group members and pots of flowers arranged and created by club members.
For the third year, students from Riverview Junior-Senior High School’s Inclusive Leaders Program will sell plants they’ve grown in the school’s greenhouse. The students and their teacher are growing the lettuce and herbs for the garden club’s lettuce and herb bowls, as well.
Food pantry offers help
