The Short Line Hollow trail in Ross has been reopened for limited public access.
Ross commissioners voted on Monday to grant access to the Red Trail following its cleanup by community volunteers.
“We’re all satisfied that it was cleaned up enough,” Commissioners President Dan DeMarco said. “They did a lot of work.”
The trail head is located off and along Cemetery Lane, near the township’s public works facility.
Created in 2016 and 2017, Short Line Hollow was closed in 2019 after thousands of tons of dirt from a landslide on Reis Run Road were deposited at its entrance. Fallen trees and broken glass were concerns on the trail.
The approval of public access is conditioned on that it is given only to the extent that the public adheres to the marked boundaries of the trail.
The state Department of Environmental Protection has informed the township that a state permit is not required for public access to the trail, according to the resolution approved by commissioners.
Short Line Hollow and the trail are subject to statutes that provide the township immunity from liability for damages that could result from public access to the trail.
The township will be putting up signage for the trail, township Manager Ron Borczyk said.
Caution or warning signs are needed for part of the trail that is near a deep ravine, DeMarco said.
