The Pittsburgh Riverhounds’ first match in the newly formed USL Jagrmeister Cup was hard to swallow.

Darren Smith scored in stoppage time to give Detroit FC a 1-0 victory over the Hounds on Saturday.

In the 91st minute, Ben Morris sent a cross from the left side into the box and Smith headed it inside the left post.

The Riverhounds had a chance to tie just before the final whistle when Illal Osumanu redirected a Sean Suber cross on goal, but Detroit defender Devon Amoo-Mensah made a desperation clear before Jorge Garcia could cash in.

The result in the in-season tournament does not count in the USL Championship standings. The Riverhounds will play three more matches in Group 4, which also includes Hartford, Rhode Island, Westchester and Portland, before the knockout stage.

The Riverhounds (2-3-1) will return home for a match at 7 p.m. next Saturday at Highmark Stadium against North Carolina FC.
