Downed and hanging trees have left Agan Park closed indefinitely after heavy storms battered the area last week.
The park is an extensive green space along Riddle Run Road in Springdale Township but is jointly managed by Springdale and Cheswick boroughs.
Cheswick Council President Brad Yaksich said borough public works crews had made “good progress” clearing downed trees, but several overhanging trees — or “widow makers” — require professional attention, he said.
In the wake of last week’s storms, which toppled trees throughout the region, those services are in high demand, according to Joe Kern, president of the Agan Park Committee.
At its next meeting later this month, Kern said the group will come up with a “plan of attack” and seek out estimates for park repairs. But Yaksich said the boroughs would continue to work to see if progress can be made sooner.
But for now, Kern said, safety is the primary concern.
“The park is just going to have to remain closed until it’s safe,” Kern said.
If costs are extensive for repairs, both borough councils and the Agan Park Committee would need to approve the measures, Yaksich said.
The Rachel Carson Trail, a 45-mile hiking trail that traverses through Agan Park, remains open, Yaksich said. But the boroughs are advising hikers to exercise “extra caution” in the park.
