Want to do something more special for Mom this Mother’s Day weekend than just buying some flowers and a card? How about taking her to one (or more) of the great events happening around town? Here’s some inspiration.
Contemporary Craft Community Day
Time to get hands-on at Contemporary Craft in Lawrenceville with a free Community Day! On Saturday, the art center will set up for a family-friendly day of activities and more.
Experience artist demos, light snacks, a scavenger hunt and plenty of hands-on experiences. The event will be spread between both buildings in the Contemporary Craft campus, including the newly opened Timmons Studios. Activities include wire botanicals, LEGO printing and a weaving activity.
The scavenger hunt will also allow visitors to check out the current exhibition “Keiko Fukazawa Retrospective: The Space in Between.” Contemporary Craft’s Community Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Learn more at contemporarycraft.org.
21 Night: Astronomy
Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the first modern planetarium’s opening this week, the Carnegie Science Center will focus on the stars for this month’s 21 night.
Naturally, this will include several shows in the Science Center’s own Buhl Planetarium. There will also be astronomy experts there to talk about the latest space discoveries, science demos and a dance party inside the “Mars: The Next Giant Leap” exhibit.
Plus, enjoy themed cocktails and explore all of the floors of the Science Center, including the “Mental Health: Mind Matters” exhibition, which is especially relevant during Mental Health Awareness Month. The evening will run from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday at the Science Center. Tickets are $25 for nonmembers and $20 for members. Attendees must be 21 with a valid ID to enter. SteelHERS Social
Maybe Mom is a sports fan, or maybe you just want to get together with your black-and-gold-loving girls on a Saturday night.
This second year of SteelHERS will offer photo opportunities with current players, a peek at the Acrisure Stadium locker rooms, a number of super fun games and activities, raffles and prizes, a friendship bracelet station and more.
The party will go from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Acrisure Stadium on the North Shore. Buy tickets and look at frequently asked questions at steelers.com.
Pittonkatonk
Head over to the Vietnam Veterans Pavilion in Schenley Park this weekend to enjoy a variety of music — from the local to the international. Pittonkatonk is back for its 12th year, bringing together a wide swathe of music, cultural demonstrations and a hint of social and environmental justice.
In addition to the world-class lineup of musicians, the festival will include family-friendly activities, opportunities to connect with local and regional organizations, and lots of delicious food and drink vendors.
Grab your reusable water bottle and head over to the Vietnam Veterans Pavilion from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday and 1 to 10 p.m. Saturday for great music and community connection. See the lineup at pittonkatonk.org.
