Security ramped up at Woodland Hills after Swissvale shooting

A juvenile was shot in Swissvale on Sunday evening, according to Allegheny County police.

County 911 was notified of a shooting at the 2200 block of Woodstock Avenue just after 6 p.m.

First responders found a juvenile with a gunshot wound to the back. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, police said.

Allegheny County homicide detectives are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call the county police tip line at 1-833-ALL-TIPS (255-8477). Callers can remain anonymous.

Woodland Hills School District will have extra security Monday at arrival and during the day at its middle and high schools, superintendent Daniel Castagna said.

Swissvale is one of the municipalities within the school district.

Castagna in a statement said district officials were “upset and alarmed” by recent incidents of gun violence in the community.

“Our administrative team works very closely with several community anti-violence groups to constantly share information inside and outside of school,” he said.

Woodland Hills is in eastern Allegheny County and covers 12 boroughs: Braddock, Braddock Hills, Chalfant, Churchill, East Pittsburgh, Edgewood, Forest Hills, North Braddock, Rankin, Swissvale, Turtle Creek and Wilkins Township. It serves about 3,500 students a year.


1 injured in rollover crash

One person was injured Sunday in a rollover crash in Penn Hills.

Crews were called to the two-vehicle wreck before 9 a.m. Sunday in the area of Allegheny River Boulevard and Nadine Road, according to Penn Hills No. 7 Volunteer Fire Company.

One person was trapped in a vehicle with live power lines nearby. First responders got the victim out through the windshield and EMS offered care.

The driver of the other vehicle was taken into police custody for suspicion of driving under the influence, according to the VFC.


Baldwin to host candlelight vigil for slain McKeesport officer

Baldwin Borough on Tuesday will host a candlelight vigil in honor of Sean Sluganski, a McKeesport police officer who was killed last year while responding to a domestic dispute between a man and his mother.

The vigil, which is scheduled on the one-year anniversary of Sluganski’s death, will be held at the Baldwin Borough building.

Those attending can collect candles at the building’s auditorium starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, and the vigil will take place in front of the building at 6:30 p.m.


Restrictions expected on Bigelow, Bennett; flaggers on Liberty Bridge

PennDOT announced lane restrictions on Bigelow Boulevard in Pittsburgh from Monday through Friday, weather permitting.

The lane restrictions will occur “as needed” in both directions at the intersection with Herron Avenue from 7 a.m. till 4 p.m., according to PennDOT. All turns at Herron will be available.

Crews will be conducting work to permanently close the pedestrian tunnel under Bigelow. Pedestrians can use the existing crosswalk, PennDOT said.

There also will be lane restrictions on Bennett Street in Pittsburgh starting Monday and lasting through mid-February.

PennDOT said it is expecting a single-lane restriction on Bennett between Zenith Way and Oakwood Street weekdays from 9 a.m. till 3 p.m.

Crews are conducting sewer work for PWSA.

Drivers also can expect to see flagging operations Monday at the Liberty Bridge, PennDOT said.

Crews will be removing a transformer, which will affect traffic signals, according to PennDOT. Flagging operations are expected on the bridge at the intersection with P.J. McArdle Roadway from 9 a.m. till 1 p.m.

Police will assist in the flagging operations.


Latest South Side patrol citations released

The South Side Entertainment Patrol — a designated unit of Pittsburgh police officers focused on the area around the bustling East Carson Street entertainment district — made an arrest and issued dozens of citations over the weekend, according to public safety officials.

The arrest was for disorderly conduct, public urination, resisting arrest and indecent exposure, police said.

The patrol also issued 15 traffic citations, 45 parking citations and 18 non-traffic citations. They conducted eight traffic stops and towed 22 vehicles.

South Side patrol officers also attended to a man who was shot Saturday night while taking out the trash at a convenience store at the 2100 block of East Carson Street.

Officers provided first aid until the victim was transported to the hospital, police said. The victim, who has not been identified, is in stable condition and speaking with detectives.
