Thriller Picture Show

The Pittsburgh Moving Picture Festival’s Thriller Picture Show is returning to The Lindsay for the second year in a row. The festival runs Oct. 11-14 and will include a variety of exciting features and short film screenings throughout the weekend. There will also be a showing of George Romero’s 1988 horror thriller “Monkey Shines” on Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. For more information, visit thelindsaytheater.org.

Plant grant sought

Sewickley officials are seeking $540,000 in state Gaming Economic Development Tourism Fund monies through the Commonwealth Financing Authority to install a new UV disinfectant system at the wastewater treatment plant, which will improve operational capacity and reduce the need for chlorine.

Council authorized the grant application Sept. 10. Borough engineer Mike Galet said the grant comes with a borough match of about $450,000 with total project costs estimated at about $1 million.

Galet said the project is not a high priority and could be pushed back to next year if grant funding is not approved.

The plant treats sewage from Sewickley, Aleppo, Glen Osborne and Haysville.

Road closures approved

Sewickley council approved the following road closures Sept. 10:

Melville Lane between Chestnut and Bank streets from 2-6 p.m. Sept. 29 for a block party.

Hill Street between Broad and Mulberry streets from 4:30-9 p.m. Sept. 28 for an October Fest event.

Shaw Alley from noon-10 p.m. Oct. 5 for a block party.

Thorn Street between Grant and Ferry streets from 3-9 p.m. Oct. 6 for a block party.

Halloween event set

Three Rivers Karting Entertainment Park presents Trunk-or-Treat from 6-9 p.m. Oct 23 at 541 Avenue B in Leetsdale. The event is free and open to the public.

Board vacancy

There is a vacancy on the Leetsdale zoning hearing board. The term expires at the end of 2027. Residents interested in the volunteer position can contact the borough office at 724-266-4820.

Special meeting planned

Leet commissioners will host a special meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 30 at the township building, 194 Ambridge Ave. The meeting will be to discuss and possibly vote on the preliminary and final land development plan of a proposed Quaker Valley High School.

Library event set

Sewickley Public Library will host a family block party for children ages birth to 6 with their parent/caregiver from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 28 at 500 Thorn St. The event is free. No registration is required. Play, build, read and learn together with blocks.

Sewickley Men’s Club

The topic of the Sewickley Men’s Club, an affiliate of the Sewickley Valley YMCA, will be Warren Gross and Glenn Gross’ film on a veteran’s journey back to Normandy, France, on Sept. 27.

Ole 5K

Lace up your running shoes and be part of the Olé 5K Benefit Race on Sept. 28 at 10 a.m. in North Park. The family-friendly race starts at Harmar Grove Pavilion (behind the swimming pool) and 100% of the proceeds go to support the Clínica del Pueblo, a nonprofit hospital in Oaxaca, Mexico, and other charitable partners who work to bring hope and opportunities to Oaxaca’s underserved communities. Autism-friendly open mic

Band Together Pittsburgh is bringing yet another Autism-Friendly Open Mic to The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center from 2 to 5 p.m. Sept. 29. Instruments, snacks and soft drinks will be provided. Everyone is welcome, regardless of musical experience. RSVP at thelindsaytheater.org.

Fire safety fair

The Quaker Valley Fire Safety Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 12 on Broad Street in Sewickley (between Beaver and Thorn). There will be fire trucks, emergency vehicles, equipment demonstrations, kids activities, food trucks and more.

This is a free community event that is hosted by the Quaker Valley Fire Safety Committee, which is made up of the Aleppo Township Volunteer Fire Company, Big Sewickley Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Cochran Hose Company, Emsworth Volunteer Fire Company, Fair Oaks Volunteer Fire Department, Leetsdale Fire Department.

Business networking

Fall StoryWalks

The Sewickley Public Library and community partners invite you to grab the family and take a stroll through any and all of the five Sewickley StoryWalk locations through Oct. 13 — Allegheny Land Trust’s Audubon Greenway, Fern Hollow Nature Center, Henle Park in Leetsdale, Mary Roberts Rinehart Nature Park and the Ohio Township Nature Center.

A StoryWalk places pages from a children’s picture book along a walking path so that children and their caregivers may enjoy nature and reading together.

Visitors are invited to scan the QR codes at the end of each walk to enter to win copies of the StoryWalk books. Location details and featured titles are available at sewickleylibrary.org/storywalk.

MGA Fundraiser

The Myasthenia Gravis Association of Western PA will hold its second annual Tour and Tasting Fundraiser to benefit the organization’s free patient support services on Oct. 27 at McLaughlin Distillery, 3799 Blackburn Road, Sewickley Hills. There will be two tours of the distillery that day — 1:15-2:30 p.m. and 2:30-3:45 p.m. Tickets will be sold for $40 for two people.

Participants will be treated to a tour of the distillery and after the tour they will participate in a tasting event of some of the 40+ bourbons, whiskeys, vodkas and flavored moonshine products created by McLaughlin Distillery. There will also be a 50/50 drawing, a bottle raffle, and more.
