Olivia Poli and Madison Quince stood outside the seating area of Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum in Oakland adjusting their caps and gowns. They and about 340 other Fox Chapel Area High School students were anxiously awaiting commencement on June 5. "My favorite high school memory would probably be all the good people to be around,” Quince said. "All the fun weekends that we had. I made a good group of friends. I’m going to miss the teachers, just everyone. It was just so much fun.” Poli said the relationships over the years stood out. "Being around my friends and meeting people that I love and care about,” she said. Poli plans to attend Saint Vincent College to study real estate. Quince plans to take six months off before studying to be a criminal investigator at the University of Miami. Twin brothers Yousuf and Noor Ghazi plan to serve in the National Guard after graduating so the military will pay for college. "You get to stay in the state and won’t get deployed for reserves,” Noor Ghazi said. "That’s why we’re going National Guard instead of the other (branches).” He said playing track and field and hanging out with friends mattered the most to him throughout high school. The high school symphonic band played "Pomp and Circumstance” as students took their seats at the front of the hall. The choir, led by director Benjamin P. Murray, performed "Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Relationships became a major theme of the event. Principal Michael Hower shared a story about how a seventh grade arm wrestling challenge led to a long-term relationship and expanded family. "The next time someone walks into your life, or sits near you at graduation, or says, ‘Hello’ on a whim, or even challenges you to an arm wrestling match keep an open mind as to how that relationship may grow,” Hower said. "For the parents, I have to tell you that I am feeling what you’re feeling, excitement, pride, nostalgia and even a little bit of sadness. I have one child well on her way running down her dreams, and I have another who received his high school diploma not more than a week ago. I wish I had some advice for you, but I don’t.” Student speakers such as senior Lance Wilhelm thanked their parents for all their support. He highlighted one senior who would always hold the door for others. Students erupted with applause. The helper was not mentioned by name. Wilhelm also talked about all the things he missed and reflected on during virtual learning because of the pandemic, and to not being afraid to slow down and cherish every moment in life. "Those small moments that may seem insignificant to us, but that can mean the world to others,” he said. "We end up getting so caught up in that scary idea of what’s next that we forget to enjoy the small picture that we are apart of here and now.” Superintendent Mary Catherine Reljac accepted the class of 2022, and said the graduates are a very special group who have overcome a lot.
