Only two players on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ current roster have played in a game for the team in the greater Washington, D.C., area.

How long has it been since the Steelers played there? The team was called the Redskins. Two naming iterations later, the Steelers this year will make a relatively rare visit to play the team now called the Commanders.

Their first game at the Washington franchise since 2016 and first game at the Denver Broncos since 2018 are among the notable aspects of the list of opponents and venues for the Steelers’ 2024 schedule.

While the dates and times will be announced at a later date — typically, the NFL’s week-by-week schedule is revealed in May — each team’s opponents for this coming season were determined at the end of this past regular season.

The Steelers, of course, will face their three AFC North rivals (Cleveland, Cincinnati, Baltimore) at home and on the road. Eight of the 11 other games, too, are predetermined via a rotation by division — this season, the Steelers will face all of the AFC West and NFC East teams.

The other three opponents on the 17-game schedule were determined via placing. As the third-place team in the AFC North for the 2023 season, the Steelers were going to face the third-place teams in the AFC East (at home), NFC South and AFC South (both on the road). That means the New York Jets will play at Acrisure Stadium and the Steelers will visit the Atlanta Falcons and Indianapolis Colts.

The breakdown of home/road for the Steelers’ other 2024 games: in Pittsburgh against the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers, Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants, and at the Las Vegas Raiders and Philadelphia Eagles.

The Steelers last season played intra-division games at the Raiders and Colts. They also just in 2022 played at the Eagles and Falcons.

Only defensive lineman Cameron Heyward and kicker Chris Boswell were part of the team the last time the Steelers played at Washington: the 2016 season opener. Those two and outside linebacker T.J. Watt are the three Steelers under contract for next season who have played a game at Denver with the franchise.

With the advent of a 17th regular-season game in 2021, each team plays five teams each season from the opposite conference. Also, teams alternate playing eight or nine home/road games per season. In 2024, all AFC teams will play more games as the visitor than as the host team.
