Three of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ most promising young players were in the clubhouse Monday, when the club made a flurry of roster moves that were overshadowed by Oneil Cruz’s position switch to center field.
Second baseman Nick Gonzales was activated from the 10-day injured list and in the starting lineup for Monday’s game against the Chicago Cubs.
Catcher Henry Davis was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis to replace Joey Bart, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain.
The Pirates designated right-handed pitcher Jake Woodford for assignment and are expected to activate rookie right-hander Jared Jones from the 15-day IL on Tuesday.
Out since July 28 with a left groin strain, Gonzales went 5 for 15 with a home run and four runs scored in four games during a rehabilitation assignment for Triple-A Indianapolis.
“I felt good to be back out on the field, getting my feet under me,” Gonzales said. “Obviously, having a soft tissue injury like that, you kind of got to get your confidence back. And running, everything, had some first to thirds, first to homes. So, it was good.”
Davis batted .307 with 15 doubles, 13 home runs, 43 RBIs and a .956 OPS in 57 games at Triple-A Indianapolis this season. He reached base safely in his last 12 games, going 17 for 49 (.347).
Jones, out since July 4 with a right lat strain, was 5-6 with a 3.56 ERA and 1.11 WHIP and averaged 9.7 strikeouts per nine innings in 91 innings over 16 starts before his injury. He tossed five scoreless innings, recording 10 strikeouts and one walk while allowing one hit in his final rehabilitation start against the Columbus Clippers on Aug. 20.
“Obviously having a good one’s pretty boost the ego a little bit,” Jones said. “But just really excited to get back. … You want to be on the field for the whole season. About two months of not playing baseball, that wasn’t fun.”
