Several longtime Trib journalists assumed key leadership roles last week. Jason Cato, Matt Provenzo and Ben Schmitt have been promoted to deputy managing editor positions, said Trib Executive Editor Luis Fabregas. Dirk Kaufman is director of newsroom operations. "Their experience and talent will play a crucial role in this ever-changing news industry,” Fabregas said. "I have no doubt they will elevate our coverage.” Cato will be deputy managing editor/Westmoreland and will oversee the team of editors and reporters in the Greensburg newsroom. He joined the Trib in 2005, working in the Pittsburgh newsroom covering the federal courthouse and working as a general assignment reporter. He has been an editor in Greensburg since 2017. Cato, a native of South Carolina, lives in Edgewood with his wife, Sara, and their daughter, Lila. Provenzo will be deputy managing editor/Valley News Dispatch and will oversee the team of editors and reporters covering the Alle-Kiski Valley. Provenzo, who has been with the company for three decades, began his career as a general assignment reporter in March 1990. He was city editor at the Valley News for 20 years and has been a news editor in the Greensburg newsroom since 2019. Provenzo lives in Murrysville with his wife, Sandy, and sons, Mark and Nicolas. Schmitt will be deputy managing editor/digital. He will oversee the digital desk, the Pittsburgh news desk and the Neighborhood News Network. Schmitt came to the Trib in 2015 after spending a decade at the Detroit Free Press and other outlets. He was part of a team that won a Pulitzer Prize for the scandal that landed the former Detroit mayor in prison. Schmitt became an editor in 2018 after working as the Trib’s health reporter for several years. He and his wife, Donna, live in Forest Hills. They have two daughters, Jordan and Chloe. In his role as director of newsroom operations, Kaufman will oversee administrative areas of the department such as budget, production and technology. Kaufman joined the Trib in 2000 as an assistant Sunday editor. Over the years, he has served as an assistant city editor, copy editor and page designer. He lives in Scottdale with his wife, Mary. They are the parents of two grown sons, Regis and Lucas. In August, Rob Amen was named the Tribune-Review’s managing editor. Amen will oversee the day-to-day operations of the news department.
