Roman Wilson given official green light to play, MyCole Pruitt out for Steelers vs. Chargers

Injury no longer will prevent a Pittsburgh Steelers rookie third-round pick from making his NFL debut.

Receiver Roman Wilson practiced fully for a second consecutive day Friday and lacked an injury designation on the league-mandated status report for Sunday’s home opener against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Wilson suffered an ankle injury less than a week into training camp and missed a month of practice time. He did not appear in any preseason games.

Wilson could serve as the No. 4 receiver Sunday, but that is no guarantee. The Steelers have been dressing Scotty Miller in that role, and the WR5 would need to contribute on special teams. Ben Skowronek had been a practice-squad call-up for the first two games but was placed on injured reserve this week.

Brandon Johnson, Quez Watkins and Jaray Jenkins are wide receivers on the practice squad.

Part of Michigan’s national championship team last season, Wilson was projected as a slot receiver the Steelers were hoping could be a third WR option behind George Pickens and Van Jefferson.

QB Wilson remains questionable

Russell Wilson’s status remains unchanged. The erstwhile starting quarterback for a second consecutive week was listed as a limited participant for all three days of practice and for a third consecutive week is listed as questionable to play.

Like he was for each of the Steelers’ first two games of the season, Wilson is expected to serve as the “emergency” No. 3 QB behind Justin Fields and Kyle Allen against Los Angeles.

Pruitt out

Veteran tight end MyCole Pruitt will not play Sunday because of a knee injury that prevented him from practicing all week.

The Steelers promoted Rodney Williams from the practice squad earlier this week, giving them five tight ends on the active roster.

Pruitt ranks second to Pat Freiermuth in snaps played among Steelers tight ends over the first two games.

Also ruled out for Sunday was starting left guard Isaac Seumalo (pectoral). Starting right tackle Troy Fautanu is listed as questionable.
