Francis C. 'Jock' Burd, 75, of Derry, passed away at home on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2024, after a courageous fight against cancer. Fran was born Sept. 15, 1949, in Latrobe to the late Lawrence and Grace (Karasack) Burd. He graduated from Derry Area High School (1967) and Dakota Wesleyan University (1972). In 1999, he was inducted into the DWU Athletic Hall of Fame for his outstanding achievements on the football field and his contribution to Dakota Wesleyan University. Fran worked at Latrobe Die Casting for several years and then became an educator at both Geibel Catholic and Greensburg Central Catholic High Schools. He was a member of Latrobe Presbyterian Church, where he served as one of the youth group leaders for many years. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. Road trips, canoe and kayak trips, hikes, and cruises were shared with family and friends over the years. He found joy in teaching his daughters and grandchildren to be strong, independent, and creative individuals. He loved and supported each of their dreams and passions. He loved working on his tractor or in his barn and helping others. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Eileen Burd, and brother, Larry 'Butch' Burd. Fran is survived by his loving wife, Lorraine (Anderson) Burd; children, Nicole Wolfgang (Mark) and Lindsay Balliett (Stephen); grandchildren, Abigail and Elise Wolfgang and Francis Balliett; brother, Mark 'Dutch' Burd (Margaret); and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family. Family and friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Lopatich-Brinker Funeral Home, LLC, 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Unity Chapel with the Rev. Derek Campbell officiating. Everyone is asked to please go directly to Unity Chapel.
