Two Penn Hills businesses are coming together to provide the ultimate sweet experience for customers. Sweet Honey’s Bakery is partnering with Ma’s Honey at 11101 Frankstown Road. The joint business will be a diner-style experience, and the menu will expand to offer traditional breakfast items, coffee, baked goods, desserts and lunch items such as panini and sandwiches. "We are trying to hit every bit of culture,” said Bill Marshall, Ma’s Honey kitchen manager. Jennifer Lackey, co-owner of Sweet Honey’s Bakey, said the previously shared kitchen space limited her business and its operations. The bakery offers a variety of sweets including cheesecake, wedding cakes, sugar cookies and more. After a year in operation, the business was growing and it was becoming harder to be able to make and fulfill orders, she said. Lackey said she, along with fellow co-owner Ronni Nelson, were receiving 30-40 orders a week. "The kitchen was not working, and it was becoming more expensive,” Nelson said. In January, Lackey put posted an ad about seeking a new space to occupy. That would balloon into an opportunity to call Ma’s Honey their new home - the two businesses had the same vision and idea. "Once we got together, it was a great match,” Lackey said. Justin Gant opened Ma’s Honey in 2018. His original plans were to make it a diner. At the time, he did not have the funds and shifted his focus to the restaurant to take out, offering all-day breakfast and soul food for dinner. His plans stalled when covid hit - until the joint business venture. "This was originally my plan. I had to do it gradually over time,” he said. The dining area is anticipated to be completed by fall. The area will give patrons a place to sit down at Ma’s Honey to relax, work or socialize. Lackey said the space will be used to host events as well. In addition to expanding business, Gant said they are trying to connect with the community more. Ma’s Honey looks to hold cooking classes, and game and trivia nights. Renovations are expected to be done this month. "Those last two years were rough. We are kind of seeing the light now,” Gant said. Tanisha Thomas is a Tribune-Review staff writer.
