A section of Route 51 near its intersection with Interstate 70 will remain closed while a railroad trestle over the highway is repaired. Rostraver Township Commissioners Pat Egros and Brian Sokol said police confirmed Route 51 south near Finley Road will be closed for up to three days. Shortly after 4 p.m. Monday, a vehicle owned by Rathway Trucking of Perryopolis struck the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway trestle. Township police said the driver, whom they declined to identify Monday, was traveling south on Route 51 at the time of the accident. The rig pulled down a support wire on a traffic signal at the intersection of routes 981 and 51 as well as phone wires near the trestle. The king pin on the tractor section of the vehicle was damaged. The rig was towed from the scene. The driver was not injured. Traffic was slowed in both lanes as police investigated the crash. Wood from the damaged trestle littered the highway at the base of the bridge. Egros said he was nearby in his backyard when he heard the accident. “I was out in the yard, heard a big boom and saw the tractor pull up at my driveway with no trailer attached, Egros said. “I called 911 and said, ‘you better get someone down here.' It's amazing no one was hurt. Although it was raining heavily at the time, township police suggested that weather and road conditions did not contribute to the accident. Rostraver Township and Smithton police along with Rostraver Central fire crews were on the scene. Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Wheeling & Lake Erie officials assessed the damage following the accident. Chris Buckley is a staff writer for Trib Total Media.
