H The Municipality of PENN HILLS A HOME RULE COMMUNITY WITH SYMPATHY AND GRADITUDE On behalf of the Residents of Penn Hills to the Residents of Plum Borough from Pauline Calabrese Mayor of Penn Hills Our Deepest sympathy goes to all those impacted by the Rustic Ridge tragedy that befell our neighbors in Plum on August 12th and especially to the families of those who lost their lives. May they Rest In Peace: CASEY CLONTZ KEEGANCLONTZ Many of us in Penn Hills personally know residents of Rustic Ridge but all of us in Penn Hills are their neighbors. When the call came to me on that Saturday morning to advise me that our police, firefighters, paramedics and emergency medical technicians (EMTS) were being dispatched to render aid to Plum Borough, I had no idea how great an impact such a tragedy of this nature would have on our entire eastern corridor. Multiple communities, individuals, volunteers and neighbors banded together in the most fantastic way, bringing to mind the famous quote of James Lane Allen: HEATHER ORAVITZ PAUL ORAVITZ KEVIN SEBUNIA MICHAEL THOMAS Adversity does not build character - it reveals it. On that morning, I immediately called the Mayor of Plum, Harry Schlegel, to offer condolences and continued support and services from Penn Hills. He expressed tremendous gratitude for the help from our first responders. He conveyed to me the tremendous effort put forth by public safety officials, as well as the outpouring of help from the neighbors who offered their homes and driveways as staging areas to members of the community who brought food, water, chairs, fans and many other items for comfort and safety. At the Plum Council meeting on August 23, the President of Council, Mike Doyle, tried to convey the beauty of seeing everyone come together. Hellen Keller said: The best and most beautiful things in this world, cannot be seen or even heard, but are felt with the heart. The efforts in this matter have been nothing short of heroic. Therefore, it is with tremendous gratitude that we honor all those involved. St. John the Baptist Church in Plum held a prayer vigil on August 15th and has announced that there will now be a service for the first responders, stating that: Holy Family Parish will honor the men and women who tirelessly protect and serve our local communities with a Mass of appreciation. Firefighters, law enforcement officers, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, doctors, nurses, all healthcare workers, volunteer organizations and all those who respond to emergencies and disasters have been invited to attend.
