H The Municipality of PENN HILLS A HOME RULE COMMUNITY Mayor's Message By Mayor Pauline Calabrese After the U.S. Supreme Court declared that students could not be mandated to pray in public schools, Ronald Reagan said, "As long as there are algebra tests, there will be prayer in school." It was an honor to be invited to attend a press conference on May 23rd, where the Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Education announced that the Penn Hills School District has been released from financial recovery status. While the School District and the Municipality of Penn Hills are two completely separate bodies, it has been said that, "As a school district goes, so goes the municipality." Of course, this is the case since the state of a school district is one of the first things home buyers look at when deciding where to live. Our School Board of Directors, led by Board President Erin Vecchio, with the assistance of Chief Recovery Officer Dan Matsook and the school administration, have worked very hard to achieve this level of success. Over the past five years, our school district has moved from a negative fund balance to a $19 million fund balance. Both the school district and the municipality, which ended last year with a $14 million fund balance, are moving in an upward trajectory - which is sensational news for all of us who call Penn Hills home.
