Several major projects now have funding commitments, planning momentum, and community support. One of the most anticipated upgrades is the realignment of the Brilliant Avenue intersection with Freeport Road, a key gatewayto the riverfront and community park areas. This project is designed to improve traffic flow and safety at a crossroad heavily used by residents, recreational visitors, and commuters. Federal funding secured through fiscal year 2026 appropriations include $2 million specifically for this realignment, funded through a community project initiative championed by Congressman Chris Deluzio. The allocation will help reconfigure the intersection and improve access to the Allegheny RiverTrail Park, enhancing pedestrian visibility and reducing conflict points for vehicles and cyclists alike. The intersection work marks a substantial step toward modernizing local roadways and aligns with future riverfront activation goals. While not as visible as a new roadway or park feature, the rehabilitation of the 6th Street retaining wall is one of the most important safety projects underway. The aging wall supports a section of roadway and pedestrian access. Over time, structural deterioration required engineering evaluation and the development of a stabilization plan. The 2026 project will reinforce and stabilize the structure, protecting both the street above and properties nearby. Recreation is also a major focus for 2026. Construction is expected to move forward on new pickleball and multi-use courts at Ben Killian Field, responding to growing community interest in outdoor activity spaces. Pickleball continues to gain popularity among residents of all ages. Dedicated courts will provide a permanent, professional-quality space for players while reducing wear on other park surfaces. The adjacent multi-use court is designed to support basketball, youth sports programming, and open play offering flexible recreation options for families and neighborhood groups.
